My new to me 2003 wildwood 29BHSS has a parallax 7355 converter in it . The way that I understand it is when hooked up to ac the full 55 amps from the dc converter goes to charge the batteries. Is this correct? If so it seems to me that anything over a couple of hours at 55 amps is going to fry the batteries in short order. Can the batteries be disconnected or what can I do to keep from ruining my batteries ?

The full 55 amps are available to the batteries and 12 volt appliances as needed. The converter does not apply the 55 amps all the time. The amount of charging curent is a function of how discharged the batteries are. At full charge, only a small amount of current is applied.

That particular converter is a single stage converter that holds the batteries at about 13.7 volts when fully charged to keep them charged. It will cause the batteries to lose water so check them fairly often.

Correct forcing 55amps into a battery over a period of time would fry the battery.

The controller only provides what the battery needs and tapers off as the charge builds up.
Same as the alternator with the engine battery. Many alternators can put out 100+ amps but don't fry the battery

The thing is the fixed voltage at 13.6/13.8 will not continue to force 55 amps into the battery. In fact you will be lucky to get 55 amps into the battery for more than a few minutes. That converter will take 24 hours to charge a battery because the amps will taper off quickly at that voltage.

If you expect anywhere near a full charge in two hours you will need to think about replacing the 7355 with a multistage converter.

Thanks for all the info !

I am not concerned with charging my batteris quickly since this isn't good for deep cycle batteries anyway. I just didn't want to cook them if pluged into AC for several days.

Watch the water in hot 95+ weather is the only thing to worry about.
A multistage converter will drop voltage after a time and use less water.
