Thinking about going to either places for a few days of serious fishing. Probably get a fishing guide.
Any suggestions on campgrounds and/or fishing?

Bud,
Haven't tried either place, but I know there are plenty of fisherman at Port Aransas. Saw some great catches come in there. ts of campgrounds around, too. In fact every day we used to go down by the docks close tto the ferry and watch the fisherman lined up and out on the breakwater also. Give me a call if you want. I'm in the book.

Having to think back many a year but as I remember, just before you get to Port O'Connor there is a turn off and is signed "Charley's Fish Camp." Used to be a good spot to fish and there were guides available, especially in town.

Strictly for fishing I would suggest Port O'connor rather than Port Lavaca, especially if you plan to go offshore. Port O'Connor is also located on the Intracoastal Canal whereas Port O'Conner is located at the north end of the bay system. Not sure about parking sites.
You might want to try Serendipity Resort (I think that is the name) in nearby Palacious. The town has good public lauch facilities, access to bay and Tres Palacious River as well. It is not a great distance across the bay to Matagorda Island.
Good luck.

Just got back from Texas and stayed a couple days at a city municipal park in Port Lavaca. With our Good Sam Club discount, cost us $14.40 with hookups. Right on the Gulf, but don't know about fishing access. Can't remember exactly where its at, but there is a separate roadway just for fishing running beside and below the highway. Lots of people fishing. Long way across and many were using grocery carts to put tackle boxes, etc. in. It's south of Port Lavaca.

I own a couple of lots near Port Lavaca. I keep a boat there and have enjoyed some great fishing.
However, the bay at Port Lavaca is very shallow and when the north wind blows the water gets very shallow and the fishing is not as good as other times. Rockport, Port Aransas and Asansas Pass might be a better bet, especially if you don't have a boat. Good luck and have a great time on the coast.
