I have a 2003 F150 extend cab 4x4 with the 5.4l 3.73 gears and automatic. First of all, I would like this truck a LOT better if it came with a manual tranny. It simply won't pull overdive with the torque converter locked up unless it's downhill or with a strong tailwind. It needs a gear between drive and overdrive. I just leave it in drive (OD off) and it gets around very well but gas mileage is around 8 or 9 MPG at 70 to 75 MPH

I tow a 21' Thor Tahoe Lite and have an ATV in the bed of the truck. The Thor is listed as 2880 with no options and dry so I figure around 4500 loaded with the options.

Everybody talks about the WEIGHT of the trailer when I feel what really slows me down is WIND RESISTANCE. Starting out and up to about 50 or 6 MPH the truck pulls strong but after that the wind factor becomes a major issue.

On the high altitude Rocky Mountain passes on I-70 on Colorado I was down to about 40 or 45 MPH on the highest and steepest pass.

I have a 4x4 supercrew with a 5.4 and tow a 29' trailer that should be about 6200# loaded for camping. Only one person mentionded the tail waging the dog, and he would notice that it would be greatly reduced with LT tires and proper set-up on the hitch and sway controll. I know I did and it is a non issue now. I also have a flip-chip that adds a fair amount of power that really makes a difference on hills. I just installed a tranny temp guage, but have not pulled with it yet to see what the temps are. I am comfortable with the set up that I have, but will not go any longer ar heavier until the wife gets a 3/4 burb, plus mine is payed for.

TT just got delivered to dealer today. Hope to pick it up next week. A little nervous about pulling with the 4.6, but I'm stuck in a lease so we'll have to make the best of it.

Trailer is in my signature 25'@ 4200lbs UVW 5500 MVW and I wouldn't go anymore than this without a larger truck. Check all through this websites forums and you will find enough answers for a wise desision.
Enjoy

Tow 21' Prowler Linx 5'ver with GVWR of 5000#, satisfied with the power and 5'th is rock solid towing. As said wind is a big factor in gas mileage and power but on the flats it will stay in OD with torque convertor locked. On hills or below 55 I just use 3rd gear. The rest of the particulars are in sig.

I have to wonder if there is a reason my auto won't stay locked up in overdirve??? Anybody else have any comments on this. I'm only pulling a 21' trailer but do have about 600 lbs in the bed so maybe that makes some difference.
