We pull a 20 foot Sunline Solaris Lite. It is just right for the two of us. We love it. It is approximately 3400 pounds empty with about 5400 maximum load.

I am confused at the weight of your Outback 28BHS. I just purchased a 28-RLS. The total dry weight listed in the brochure is 30 lbs less than your TT, however, today I weighted it empty and it weighted 5490 lbs. Apparently, the listed weights do not mean much.

I pull a 30ft Airstream with my F150, 5.4L, 3.55 axle. The tow rating is 8000lbs (Airstream is 7160lbs dry) with a GVCWR of 13000lbs. This is all according to the data supplied by Ford.
My wife and I took a 7000 mile trip from Michigan to the West Coast through the mountains (Sierra Nevadas, Bitteroots, and others I cannot remember) with little difficulty. We took our time and we experienced few stressful moments.

I used to to a 26ft springdale with a F150. It was in the weight limits but the top end of it. I had a 4.6L in it and it was alright but that was the max i could tow with it.

I pulled a Kiwi Too 28R last year with a 4.6L SuperCrew but I needed more piece of mind pulling the trailer so we stepped up.

Pastor Reggie:

The weights on the Outbacks DO seem to vary. I think we discussed this question on this forum about a year ago, if I remember correctly. I don't remember what post it was on, though.

Our dry weight is 4760. This is what the sticker on the cabinet says. Taken to a weight station on our way back from the dealer, it was very near to this (still had some fresh water in the tanks since ours was a demo). Think it ended up being 4774 or something like that, with the H20 still in it.

We had moved up from a popup. We took our fully loaded popup to the weight station. Then, we took it to the weight station empty, after we took out all of our "stuff". The difference in weight was what all of our camping gear weighed.

We then took our dry Outback weight, added in the difference in pounds of our gear, and came to 5100 lbs.

I have a 2001 Outback, which was an early production model, as well. Maybe, that's why there's a weight difference? As far as towing with our F150, we're rated at 6100 lbs, max. As long as we stay close to 5000 lbs (which we're at now at 5100/5200 lbs), we are comfortable with our tow set up. I'm also in southern NJ, where it is really flat. We only venture to the Pocono PA mountains once a year, but have experienced no problems with our tow set up.

Hope this information helps!

Happy Camping!

I would really like to hear more about your towing experiences with the 4.6. I have that engine in the Supercrew (2002) and am willing to bet I have the wimpy rear differential, though my mileage is around 14 in the city. Check out my sig for specs. I wish I could have gotten the F250 but am kind of stuck. I would appreciate it if you could look at my post of July 14, 2003 ("At the limit") and comment please. I am ready for anemic performance, just don't want a complete sputter out. How bad has it been? Bless you!
