Racnmasn,

1) The reason many dealers have the push for customers to report that all transactions are "excellent" is that the automakers have finally figured out that customers are realizing that they're getting screwed. Dealerships of these makes get a higher allocation of the higher profit models if they have higher customer survey reports.

2) Toyota Japanese?...not much any more. Engines and transmissions are built in Buffalo, West Virginia, and Huntsville Alabama. Tundra and Sequioas are built in Princeton, Alabama, and a new plant is under construction in San Antonio, Texas. Tacomas are built in California. Foreign ownership, yes, much like the German ownership of Dodge.

I have had Ford "dealership" problems for years! They have lied to me, stolen from me, shoddy work, etc., etc., etc.! I always wondered WHY people continued to do business with those that don't give a rat's rear end about them once the SALE is made! Then I learned the reason, the "Big Three" car companies only make approx. 9 - 12 million cars and truck per model year and there are that many people that NEED new vehicles every year!

I would be all for a complete and total boycot of any and all motor vehicle manufacturers in this country until they straightened up, but alas, that will never happen!

What is a poor boy to do?

Keep complaining and filling out the surveys, GM will get the message when their sales drop and all the other manufactures sales go up.

GM and Ford will catch on some day that people have choices, and they don't have to chose them.

Thanks for giving me a forum to state my problem with Chevrolet.

A follow up:

The cold start knocking is getting worse; it’s lasting longer and getting louder. The noise use to only happen after sitting overnight and would very in length depending on the outside temperature. Today when I needed to go across town I started the truck and the knock lasted 50 secs. At 68*, then after sitting for 4 ½ hours I started it again and to my surprise I got the knock for about 15 secs. This is the first time that I have gotten the knock on the same day without it sitting overnight. I believe that this engine has a problem and the dealer from whom I bought this truck, H&H Chevrolet in Omaha, NE. will not fix it. On the contrary, last time I took it in for them to hear the knock after leaving the truck with them overnight. The service adviser told me on the phone that the mechanic had just finished listening to the engine and said that the knock had lasted 45 secs. When I got to the dealership to pick up the truck the mechanic had written on the invoice that the knock had lasted 1-½ minutes, somebody lied! I think they expanded the time so that when my engine gets even worse they can say that it lasted that long back then. I believe that this dealership and Chevrolet of General Motors are defrauding me. This engine is defective and needs to be repaired or replaced if they will not do that then I want to return the truck to H&H for a refund. In my opinion this is no different than any other company putting out a defective product and then being held accountable. Where is the law to help me in this situation, are the lawmakers afraid of loosing their campaign contributions from GM? H&H, Chevrolet, and GM are screwing me. In Chevrolet’s next commercials they should advise you to bring along a jar of V******* so that it wont hurt so bad!

Obviously I am angry. I have looked into the lemon law and it apparently will not help in this situation. GM has covered its bases pretty well, (carbon deposits on the pistons, what a joke!). I have spent a lot of money for this truck and have only 5700 miles on it. With the length and intensity of this knock increasing as it is I have no faith that this engine will last. At this time I don’t know what the answer is but maybe I can help someone else from making the same mistake, which is buying a Chevrolet truck.

I haven't seen where GM has fixed this problem for later model years. Is it still a problem in the 2003's or 2004's?

Hello all,

For what it is worth - (and I know this is not an apples to apples comparision)

I had a 1990 Ford Ranger 2.3 that I purchased new. At that time Ford offered 5yr/60k powertrain warranty with new vehicles. I used this truck FAR beyond what it was intended for; I crossed the scales at the landfill with loads in the 2500 to 2900 lb range - not once, not twice - but many times. I never broke a leaf spring but did bend the original springs and had to eventually replace them.

Anyway, I had occasional knocking that would come and go (before and after I started hauling such heavy loads). The Ford dealership could not 'duplicate the noise/problem'; this was very noticeable around 45k to 55k - close to my warranty expiration. And the truck didn't use oil between changes. However, I tried to expedite what I thought was certainly a forthcoming engine problem by driving in 2nd gear continually at 65 - 70 mph. The little sucker just kept going and going and going. Stupid, I know. The ford dealership finally tore the engine down at 58k and found (as they told me) slightly elliptical wrist pins in two pistons, that as they rotated would cause piston slap. After that, I had no more noise problems and drove the truck to 108k at which point it was totaled in an unfortunate accident. That has been my experience with piston slap, until now...

I just bought a 2002 GMC Sierra EC 4wd 6.0/5spd 36k.

I did not do any research (internet/consumer reports) other than knowing what the truck was worth. It has been my experience (and internet opinion polls seem to prove this) that they all (Toyota included - check out some of the Camry feedback) make lemon-worthy vehicles from time to time.

In doing general research on this truck, I found this URL:

http://forums.vmag.com/ptsierra/messages/1514.html

I also found some references to GM stating this engine should have a 200k durability target - identical to the DMax. What are anyone's thoughts or experience on this ? There was also a reference to 10k oil change intervals. How could that be possible?

I've noticed that a lot of the replies are of people who had the problem and then bought another. Cheat me once, shame on you. Cheat me twice, shame on me. Will they buy a 3rd. or 4th.?

My only question is if it is such a problem where are the real complaints so far its just an annoying noise. Its been 5 years now there should be a whole lot of people coming up with all the blown motors from this piston slap. And also if it is a real problem wont GM be liable for some of it in the future after all they nothing to stop the about soon to be catastrophic faliures. I had 2 trucks with the piston slap a 5.3 and a 6.0 and nothing ever went wrong with the motor the millage stayed the same and the oil never looked funny.

You want first hand exsperience? I am a GM TEch and I can show you first hand the crap GM is feeding you people is bull. I am Die hard GM own a 2003 silverado that is very quiet but I won't lie for anyone. GM's 3.1 an 3.4 engine lines in cars and minivans suffer from the same problem, there are updated pistons avalable for these and I have had many apart to install them. Here is where the problem is more than half had to be replaced becuase on teardown the cylender walls were score behond being able to be bored. You tell me is this a durabilty issue??? Scored cylender (lack of seal, oil consumption low compression poor fuel milage) I am GM master tech these things all go hand in hand believe what you will but I would be *****ing to the top till it was fixxed or replaced.

All .. . . ... regarding GM engine noise . . .

Today's Phily Inquire (12/7/03) has an article "At $30,000, Loud Knocking in the Engine?". The article discusses the GM engine noise problem, and here are some of the points . .

1. GM is aware of the noise, and says it is "no real problem". The noise is from carbon buildup on the pistons, and that the problem does not affect engine performance and was corrected in later model vehicles. (right - Some of us with '03 engines have the noise problem at the start, so how could it be carbon builup).

2. In some cased GM is buying back problem vehicles, but only after a lot of hassles, and I guess pressure from lawers.

3. Customers report that the noise starts within months after driving the vehicles off the lot.

4. GM says that they made a design change to the pistons in the 2003 and 2004 vehicles. This was to solve the "carbon buildup" problem. (Again, my '03 Yukon has an engine noise, and I have 1000 miles on the engine. I also notice that the gas mileage is low, 9 to 11 GPM, with out towing).

5. GM says that the "carbon builup" will not cause any damage to the engine. GM says that the carbon builup is not hard enough to score the piston walls. (But what if the real problem is piston rocking in the cyclinder. It will score the piston wall.)

6. They talk about a Mr Martiny, who bought a Silverado in Feb '02. GM told him that the engine noise would not cause any damage to the engine, etc, etc. He complained to the truck dealer and to a GM customer assistance manager about the problem. Later that month, he got a letter from GM offering him a 100,000 mile warranty. He refused the warranty as he wanted to keep the truck well beyond 100,000 miles.
He got legal help in early 2003, and shortly after, GM came up with a $3000 settlement (attornies say that GM will offer anywhere from $2000 to $5000 to resolve the case). Martiny turned the money down. About a month ago GM bought back his truck for $40,000, and paid his attorney fees. The attorney said that GM usually settles these charges out of court.

Well, what is one to do? ken
