Bought my first vehicle almost 40 years ago and one thing has remained constent....the quality of the dealership you purchase from will largely determine the quality of service (or lack there of) that you recieve. When we buy a vehicle the manufactor makes their money, any money they lay out after that is pure expense. The bean counters apparently rule in today's companies and unfortunately most of them appear to be very short sighted. Have had vehicles with piston slap and never had a problem .... but no longer own any of those vehicles. Suggestions that we all vote with our pocket books are wonderful, now all we need is for folks who have perfect vehicles, made by perfect companies and sold by perfect dealers need to post so that the rest of us know where to cast our ballot ... If it wasn't for Japanese we'd all be driving the crap they produced in the 80's. Remember when the Big 3 dropped all the warranties to 12 months? Japanese auto makers continued the 3 years and they had to match it or go down.

"We are professional grade"

Professional My A_ _,

The problem is not carbon buildup on the pistons and Chevy knows it. I have a 2002 2500HD w the 8.1 and only 5700 miles on it. I have had this cold start knocking noise since I bought the truck. I never really noticed the noise until a couple of days after I had it. I have taken the truck into the dealer for the problem, and the first few times they told me it was normal and not to worry about it. I then did a Google search and found out differently, I took it back and made an issue of them finding out what was causing the noise. The first time the mechanic said that the noise was piston slap and that they had recieved a "Do Not Repair Notice" from GM. The second time the same mechanic said that it was carbon deposits on the piston after he spoke with GM tech advisors. I asked if they would fix this problem and they said that there was nothing that they could do.

I called the "Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center" and they also were well trained, they said the same line, Carbon Deposits. I told this person that my truck must have been shipped from their factory with the carbon preinstalled because this has been occuring since new. She admitted this has been going on since 1999 until now, that they have redesigned the engines to correct this while still insisting that it is not a problem. I feel that Chevrolet knowingly sold me a defective truck and in my opinion that is fraud, If you think these engines aren't defective just go out and see what the resale value is.

In the end they refused to fix the problem and offered me a 3 year extension (only covering the engine) to my warranty, I asked what the hell good that would do me, if they say that it's not a problem now are they all of a sudden going to say it's a problem in three years and fix it.

Chevrolet has conducted an experiment with these engines and we, the consumers are the guineapigs. I use to think that I could trust and believe in chevrolet and its honor, now I know that Chevrolet has no honor. I will never buy an GM product again. Ford, Dodge, Japanese products, anything is better than dealing with a company that is eager to take your money and then doesn't care about your problems with their mistakes.

I will never buy a GM product again. I told myself I will give them one more try because I usually buy Ford. Lets be true Ford builds more or more models better then GM. However, GM large trucks are good. Back to my opinion: When I was looking for my tow vehicle, a diesel, ever GM dealer I went to their sales men were like, um, like a crack dealer or a black market dealer. They were horriable, started telling me this reason and this reason, on the price tag someone wrote in blue pen a $4000 increase for no apparent reason. I kept telling myself goto Ford every time I went to a chevy dealer the samething. I even had two salemen almost fighting over me.

I would ask them about the $4000 increase and they would just say its because it's a diesel. I could not believe an automaker could act this way and stay in business but they do.

I know every auto maker acts this way but come on GM dealers are the pro's when it comes to it.

I ended up buying a Dodge Cummins, ford just didn't have the price I wanted.

I hope American auto makers get their head out of there butt because Toyota is getting close with their large truck.

What I have read was that it was only the short skirt Vortec engines that were having the problem and the 1995 and prior engines were not included. The failure in your 1995 was probably due to some other issue I would guess.

We are a large truck shop that works on nothing but trucks. We have two techs who replace or repair engines everyday. We have never had an engine failure due to the piston slap noise although I hear it on just about every truck. I thing GM is right in saying it won't affect the longevity of the engine and backing that up with the extended warranty.

I have a 2002 2wd Escalade and a 2001 4wd GMC Sierra SLT. Both have the same engine and both knock after warm up. What now? Prior to the Escalade I owned a Mercedes E class. It too had piston slap at start up but ran very quiet after 5 seconds. These two continue to knock post warm up.

Even the imports have had there share of problems with piston slap. The problem is that now a days you just do nothing, its cheaper.

Last night I just watched a show about the Ford police vehicles that are blowing up when hit in the rear because of the way the gas tank is located. Many people have died from fire and Ford is settling all lawsuits out of court. Do you think they would change the design?? Nope, they just keep saying nothing is wrong and keep paying out the money to settle the lawsuits, its cheaper.

Its called the Detroit Attitude.

The Japanese auto industry was a sudden slap of reality back in the 70/80's and detroit came around but looks like they're sinking into apathy again. Its sad because detroit is very capable but elects to be otherwise.
