I just bought my 03 1500HD CC 6.0L 4.10. Took Delivery with 360 miles on the OD. Now, after 3 weeks, the truck has 3120 miles after a round trip to PA for a deer hunting trip. No noise, no slap. I know its early, but so far, so good. My question about all of this is this: Some of the posts on here, the drivers only have low milage or seem to drive the trucks infrequently, or don't put a lot of miles on them every year. I have more miles in a couple of weeks that they do in a year! Does anyone think that has anything to do with this slapping noise/carbon build-up? What I mean is, are you better off if your lifestyle (like Mine is) means you'll have 100k miles on this motor in 3 years easy or if it would take 10 years to get to 100K? Is it a problem that is completely independent of miles/driving/ect...? Any ideas? My truck just left again this morning with my wife to Winston-Salem for a dog show... another 500 mile weekend in the books.

I recently purchased a 1999 Silverado w/ 5.3 engine. The truck has 126,000 miles on it and the motor knocks just a little on cold morning start-up, otherwise it is as smooth running as any engine I've had - super quiet. In approx. 2,000 miles oil consumption has been maybe half a pint and according to the factory gauge, pressure is about 45-50 lbs @idle. Things may change soon, but as far as I can see it appears to be a good engine with good power and mileage. Good luck to those of you with problems, hope GM gets straight with you.

Hello everyone and Happy Holidays!

Well, you can add me to the club. Four months ago I purchaced a 2001 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4, and while I love the truck in general, this problem does concern me. Fortunately, I purchaced an 3yr 36k bumper to bumper extended warranty. I initally brought it in for a question on the oil consumption. It is using oil at the rate of 1 qt. every 4000 miles at least, sometimes as low as 500 or 1000 miles, depending if I need to run the truck harder. I am a volunteer fireman, so some months we get more calls and I end up putting more miles on it.
When I brought it in, within 24hrs they diagnosed a bad a/c compressor (covered under warranty) and a bad passenger door power lock/power window control unit (also under warranty). They also said that I had carbon buildup and wanted $375.00 to fix this, and they could not guarentee that this would fix the problem. By the way, this procedure was NOT covered under the warranty. They stated that they needed to do this to further diagnose the system. This all happend before I found out about the problems relating to this.
When I purchaced the truck, I test drove it several times and noticed nothing unusual. Not even the ticking sound on starutp. I did notice, however, that if you have started the truck earlier that day (within a few hours), you do not hear the ticking sound.
Anyways, guess I am screwed on this problem, along with a bunch of other folks.

Joe M, nice link, but it didn't tell us HOW to get GM to buy back your vehicle. Do you have any further information on how to go about a buyback? I might be interested. With the mileage I put on my truck every year, I NEED it to last at LEAST until it's paid off in a tad under four more years. Any additional information and/or links would be appreciated. If and when I had/have the time, I can try to call GM to inquire, but it is not possible at this time.

I called costomer affairs as to the piston slap problem on my below vehicle, and I was told there are possible solutions. They said I first need to create a paper trail before thay can help me by taking it into the dealer for a diagnostic evaluation first. They gave me a case number and the name of the person I was talking too. Will now take the truck to the dealer in about a month from now to see what happens. I am prepared to get the run around, but we owners "ALL" need to do something for GM to get off there butts and do something about this problem. I have a feeling they might offer me an extended warrany up to 100,000 miles on the engine. If they ever do I will decline this waranty because I don't trust warranties, and feel this is just there way to pasify me, and if there is ever a problem there warranty will have some hole in it where it will be worthless for them do do any work on the engine. Beside, I bought this truck with the intentions of it lasting more than just 1000,000 miles. I currently have a 91 Explore and it has 156,000 mile on it so I expect the GMC product to get at least this. SUGGEST ALL OWNERS WITH THIS PROBLEM TO CONTACT GMC CUSTOMER AFFAIRS COMPLAIN AND START THE PROCESS OF GETTING SOMETHING DONE. Schepp.

I think schepp4 has the right idea with regard to getting a regional rep involved. I found that link by accident while doing research for my next engine. Maybe all interested parties should send a copy of that link along with their complaints to the rep? Best of luck Guys!

Happy Trails, Joe.

I bought a new 1992 Ford Ranger extended cab, 5 speed and 4.0 engine.
At 12,000 miles I then noticed a noise when engine was cold and a slight load was applied with low rpm's. After a mile or so the knock was gone. After taking it back to the dealer a number of times and their mechanics telling me they could not detect any noise I then went to another Ford dealer in the area and they confirmed a piston slap and would replace engine. The truck had 28,000 miles at this time.
They did such a smooth short block exchange that I had a very hard time to confirm that the block had been changed. This new block now has 80,000 miles and has devloped a piston slap. On cold mornings the piston slap is heard for the first mile or two and even after a 2 to 4 minute warm up.I have noticed the slap for the last 10 to 15 thousand miles.
I guess I will just live with this problem for now or until it gets worse but after reading other posts on Chevy and Ford and their problems I'll just keep on driveing the Ranger for I have been very satisfied with it.
