Has anyone been to Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio? Is it worth the trip, how's the camping in or around that area?

We spent a damp, chilly weekend there this past fall (too early for leaves changing unfortunately). I had spent a year at O.U. and was anxious to see the campus again, so we hit the caves, etc. also. Stayed in the Top O' the Caves campground. It was okay, but we did ask to be moved from the wet, shady area to a more open one. The open area is tricky as the spots are back in. Picture a circular space with everybody backing in to the center! Our "neighbors" arrived late, and I thought sure they were going to hit us! We did take the 2 dogs on the hikes to the different sites to see. It is a beautiful area, but I hope it's not raining when you visit!! If you're interested in the Top O' the Caves, the website is: www.TopOtheCaves.com. (I saved the brochure from our visit.)

We were there last April and had a great time. Stayed in the Old Man's Cave campground (part of the state park). Was a pretty typical Ohio park campground. It has good size site with electric only. First come first serve I think. Campground was big & had a swimming pool and a very nice fishing (only) lake. We spent time hiking some of the trails & the scenery was beautiful. If you like hiking or walking, I would go when there are no leaves on the trees or when they are changing colors. Some of the nicest scenery in Ohio.

There is a small town & a Super Walmart nearby. There are other private campgrounds nearby .. but we prefer State Parks.

Don't know if it's worth coming all the way from Maine to see, but we live three hours away, so it is close, and it is on our must see again list. Our favorite Ohio destination so far.

I'm reasonably nearby to hocking Hills, but I don't camp there much. Only a couple times over the past few years. It's a nice scenic, very rural area. It's becoming very popular as a "hot tub cabin" destination but is not overflowing with good campgrounds. As someone else said, I wouldn't travel from Maine with Hocking Hills as a destination. As a matter of fact I'm doing just the reverse this fall, going from Ohio to Maine. Between Maine and upstate New York there have to be lots of better places to go without driving this far.
