We just got back from a vacation at Yellowstone and had a wonderful time. We had one interesting problem that we are laughing about now.
The night before we left, I was checking everything over and noticed something amiss under the trailer. Upon closer inspection, I found that a nut off of one of the spring shackles had vibrated loose and we had lost it. Well, there aren't many hardware stores in the vicinity of Yellowstone that are open on Saturday night. We ended up getting up early Sunday morning, driving 100 miles to Livingston, MT to a hardware store where I bought a 72 cent nut. We drive 100 miles back, put the nut on, and were able to break camp and leave.
Thank goodness I discovered it there. As it turned out, it was just a minor inconvenience to us, but gave us a funny story to tell.

In ten years I never had a lug nut come loose. Last year after the 4 or 5 trip with the new camper for some reason (I have never did this before)I got the lug wrench out and checked the lug nuts 18 were finger tight or looser. I am glad I caught them at home instead of having them come on the road. I now check them before each trip.

You're lucky it was just a missing nut. I had a leaf spring on my 35 foot fifth wheel break last week in Texas. Lucky I noticed it when we pulled into a mall parking lot. Half of it was hanging down. With the help of the Good Sam road side service I was able to limp to a repair shop a mile away (the wrecker driver chaned up the back axel). It cost $277.00 to replace all four sets of springs. What a bargin and the new ones are heaver duty than the old ones. I checked the break on the bad spring and found that it had been broken half way through for some time at the bolt hole that holds the leafs together.
When I discovered it, the back axel was already about 8 inches to the aft and unsecured. If it had happened at highway speed, the axels would have ripped out and we would have been pulling a sled!!!
Count yourself lucky.

The first trailer I owned was a 17' Bell, single axle. I never bothered to check the lug nuts, I mean they never come loose on the car right.
We had the trailer for a year or more. One day we were making a trip to Spokane and only got about 10 miles down the freeway when the wheel came off. It went right through the floor of the trailer, broke through the closet wall and ended up on the rear sofa. The trailer was destroyed.
I was glad the traffic was light, as the trailer swerved into the on coming lane and back a couple times before I got it stopped.(the sway bar didn't help here)
I now check nuts and bolts regularly.
