There's more good news on alternative fuels. Northern California-based Solazyme Inc. has announced that it is developing a new Soladiesel fuel, which is claimed to be the first biodiesel produced from algae. The company also reported that Soladiesel has undergone road testing in a blend used in a diesel engine under typical driving conditions, and its fuel exceeds the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) biodiesel standard D6751.
Soladiesel signed a biodiesel development and testing agreement with a division of Chevron U.S.A. Inc. and said that it has been working with Chevron and the Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to develop algae strains that can be economically processed into transportation fuels.
