The National Park Service (NPS) is looking for volunteer couples, with one party having a law-enforcement background, to work with law-enforcement rangers. The NPS prefers candidates who have a minimum of at least 15 years of active law-enforcement experience. The position is for Park Desk Officer or the Volunteer Visitor Assist Program (VVAP), working a few days a week. The Park Desk Officer takes non-emergency police reports and other duties as assigned, freeing park rangers to deal with more immediate calls for service. The Volunteer Visitor Assist Program consists of motorized patrol in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The NPS is currently placing volunteers for programs at Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Programs at Yosemite and Great Smoky require a couple; the Yellowstone program only requires an individual.
The National Park Service will provide a campsite with full hookups for a recreational vehicle up to 40 feet in length. No other housing is available.
If interested in volunteering for the Park Desk Officer or the VVAP position for a minimum commitment of 10-12 weeks, contact Park Desk Office Coordinator, Ira H. Reynolds, Yosemite National Park; email Ira_Reynolds@partner.nps.gov, or call (209) 372-0608.
The normal season for most programs runs from around the end of March each year until mid-October. Inquiries should be made no later than October 10, 2005.
