Seagulls drift on the morning breeze as kayakers glide across the placid water below. The deep-sea fishing boats set their course hours ago in the early morning fog, but now children build sandcastles on the shore in the balmy California sunshine. Presiding over the idyllic scene while providing endless photographic possibilities, Morro Rock is perhaps the most recognizable landmark along the California coast. With its hulking presence on the edge of the harbor, Morro Rock practically beckons to travelers to come explore Morro Bay.
This inviting town in Central California, between Cayucos to the north and Los Osos to the south, may seem too good to be true, since birders, golfers, hikers, bikers, boaters and surfers can all indulge their passions within minutes of each other. Yet even travelers who prefer to do little more than stroll along the sand or dine on fresh seafood in fine restaurants have to succumb to the call of Morro Bay. Travelers in town on Saturday afternoons can enjoy the Fish and Farmers' Market held on Main Street, an event that features crafts and music, as well as the expected culinary delights.
